Where Man and Mountain Meet
My formative years were spent under the English school system. I was taught the rich and colourful history that England and it's neighbouring countries provided but when I returned to Canberra to finish my schooling, I discovered that the particular history I had been learning about meant very little in the Australian school system.
It turns out that history changes depending on where you are which meant no more knights, fair maidens and monsterific battles for me...instead I was offered by comparison a rich history of sheep and politicians. I felt for a very long time that there was no magic to be had here but as I got a little older and dug a little deeper, I found that Canberra had a lot more to offer than the brochures were letting on.
I imagine that this is true of most places, no doubt even your own home town and the less likely that this may seem, the more unusually colourful the history is. But don't waste time searching for answers at the tourist information center. Where you're going is off the path well travelled. On my path I found boobies and that's just the tip of the iceberg...
